THE SPICY GINGERREVOLUTION
Gingerbeer originated with the export of exotic ginger roots from Asia. Especially in Britain, they became very popular for their spicy taste and healthy properties.
In a search for new flavor combinations, the pioneers of gingerbeer mixed ginger with sugar and water. The natural fermentation process created by the wild yeasts on the ginger peel produced a fizzy and spicy alcoholic drink, sometimes as high as 11% in alcohol.
AUGUST
The deliciously popular drink unfortunately faced a new law from the British Parliament. This law imposed export taxes on alcoholic beverages, making gingerbeer practically unaffordable. To keep their heads above water, producers lowered the alcohol content to below 2%.
Today, gingerbeer is rather known as a non-alcoholic soft drink, where unfortunately even the fermentation is often skipped.
A FAMILY WITH DREAMS
TOO EXPENSIVE
August was born on March 26, 1944. Not long after meeting his wife, they welcomed 3 children and later 8 grandchildren.
Every Wednesday was a holy day at the home of August, everything and everyone had to give way, because that was when they would watch the grandchildren and conjure up delicious meals for the whole family. This weekly tradition brought the grandchildren very close together.
In 2017, they unfortunately had to say goodbye to someone very special,
August lost the battle against cancer.
Stijn, grandson of August, discovered a passion for gingerbeer during his college days. He spent hours and days discovering the history and brewing process of gingerbeer. Dozens of brewing attempts, brewing courses, and indelible stains on his mother's kitchen later, Stijn abandoned his dream for a while and focused on his career in sales.
Arthur, another grandson of August, studied marketing, where he was stimulated by the craft and entrepreneurship.
At one of the many parties where the cousins meet, the gingerbeer dream came back to life. They joined forces to breathe new life into alcoholic gingerbeer, with fermentation, in honor of their grandfather, August.
'Gist' means yeast in Dutch, hence... Augist!
